D'Alton of Kildalton (Ireland). The Daltons descend from the William Dalton who went to Ireland in about 1171 with “Strongbow” in the Norman Invasion of Ireland. The name Dalton was usually written Daton in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the 'l' being mute in Norman-French names. The country people follow the old rule, and always pronounce it 'Dawton'. The largest parcel of land located in the Suir Valley in south County Kilkenny was named Kildalton after the Anglo-Norman family of Dalton who were in possession thereof. After the unsuccessful rebellion of 1641, Ireland was carved up and split up between various Cromwellian financiers and soldiers. The Daltons, like many other catholic supporters of the rebellion, were dispossessed of their lands. Colonel Sir John Ponsonby from Haile in Cumberland, who came to Ireland with Oliver Cromwell in 1649, was rewarded for his military services with a knighthood and Dalton lands. Ponsonby signalled his intention of make Kildalton his place of residence and of creating an estate according to the English model. He built a a large house and renamed the estate Bessborough in honour of his second wife, Elizabeth. After the death of Cromwell and the accession of Charles 2 to power, the Ponsonbys were dispossessed of their newly gained lands in the ?1660s and the Daltons reinstated. However, this was not to last long. Sir John had died in 1678, but his sons profited from the defeat of the Jacobite forces in 1691 which resulted in securing the Ponsonbys in possession of the extensive lands they had acquired a generation earlier in County Kilkenny. They were to further increase their estate by purchasing in 1702-3 a modest parcel of 281 acres of land forfeited to the crown by other defeated Jacobites. They were fervent supporters of brutal and repressive measures against all Catholics in order to protect their privileges.
